Maruti Alto is made in India especially customized for the Indian car market, which is heavily dominated by small cars. The car was launched in India on September 27, 2000. Interestingly, Suzuki was exporting Maruti Zen to the European markets from India since 1994 with the brand name of Maruti Alto. The car with Maruti Alto brand name had 40% market share in Belgium and 33% in Netherlands around 1998.Alto has crossed the 1 million mark in production as of February 2008. The car has maximum power of 47 PS (35 kW) and provides acceleration of 0-100 km/h in approximately 20 seconds. The top speed of the car is 137 km/h.
Maruti Alto is available in many variants. The base model of the car is without air conditioner. The LX version is available with air conditioner, cup holders, fabric seats and remote fuel lid opener. Another variant is Lxi, which is available with power steering. The popularity of Maruti Alto in India is mostly due to its price tag. Indian consumers are price sensitive. Earlier another Maruti product 800 was the best seller in the market. When Alto was launched people realized that by paying just a bit more money they can have a better product.  has the record of selling 200,000 units in one year in the Indian market. The car also has the record of selling over 22,000 units in one month.
