Garmin Nuvi 780 4.3 Inch GPS Navigator Review

The Garmin Nuvi 780 4.3-Inch GPS Navigator is a premium level GPS featuring a huge display, Bluetooth, preloaded maps, hands-free calling, an FM transmitter, Enhanced MSN Direct service and various integrated features while still maintaining reliability and ease of use. Installing or mounting the unit is easy. Just attach the mount to the windshield, put in the GPS, and connect the power the car’s cigarette lighter. The Garmin Nuvi 780’s 12v adapter is also the MSN Direct receiver, receiving real-time traffic data, movie listings, gas prices, weather, news and more.

The Garmin Nuvi 780’s traffic data is generally limited to major highways and cities. When it is available, the GPS responds intelligently. For example, if a traffic event that will impact your current route is received, the GPS displays the corresponding icon in the lower-right hand corner of the map display. Tapping the alert displays additional information about the traffic event. Note that if the GPS receives a traffic alert and finds a faster route with less traffic, it will automatically prompt the driver with a message asking if you want to route around the traffic.

Garmin’s traffic integration is well implemented and easy to use although data accuracy is an issue. However, this has nothing to do with the GPS and more to the traffic data service so make sure you get a good one to go with the Garmin Nuvi 780. Navigating controls and menus is a snap as most of the gritty details is handled automatically by the GPS.

Overall the Garmin Nuvi 780’s map screen is well implemented and carefully designed. It is easy to read and very easy to use. For example, notice how the green information bar across the top of the map screen mimics the color and font used on actual highway signs. The angle of the 3D map makes it easy to see upcoming maneuvers. The map screen is one of the most important aspects of any GPS and the Garmin Nuvi 780 gets it right.

Including the Stop button is a nice feature as it simplifies things greatly. Other features like Bluetooth and hands-free calling were also added. It also allows you to combine the Bluetooth functionality with the GPS’s internal FM transmitter for hands-free calling using your car’s stereo system instead of the GPS’ internal speaker. These and all the other little touches here and there add a great deal of refinement to the Garmin Nuvi 780 and make it all the better choice for any person who gets lost on the roads easily.
