All About Ex Demo Cars

Most vehicle purchasers have driven a demo car. These are the vehicles that potential customers test before they decide to order a new model. Since demo cars are used to “entice” the customer to buy, they usually come loaded with features and are extremely well serviced. And because dealerships cannot afford for a test vehicle to perform poorly, they only use these vehicles until they accumulate a specified number of miles, which makes them an excellent purchase consideration for the bargain hunter.

Unlike a traditional used car, ex demo cars are often more attractive to purchasers because they receive regular maintenance, have the warranty of a new car, comparatively lower mileage and can usually be purchased at a better price than a new vehicle. Additionally, a purchaser may get a virtually new vehicle with upgrades that they may otherwise have been unable to afford.

If you’re considering purchasing an ex demo vehicle, know what to look for and what questions to ask to ensure you’re getting what you’re paying for. Here are some considerations:

o Inspect the vehicle carefully, preferably when in bright daylight so imperfections are easier to see. Remember many drivers have taken the demo car for a spin, so you’ll want to be sure that there are no tears, scratches or marks on the upholstery. Walk around the exterior of the car and inspect it for nicks, scratches, chips and dents.

o Ask who has been using the demo. Sometimes a demo may be used as a loaner car. Other times a staff member may drive one as a personal vehicle. Demos that are primarily used on lots for test drives are likely to receive better care and have less damage than those that have doubled as loaner cars for an extended period of time.

o Ask if the demo vehicle has been involved in any accidents or has had any non-routine service. Request to review a copy of the service records.

o Negotiate the price of the demo. Research vehicles made in the same year with similar mileage, consider the Red Book or Glass’s Guide. Discuss a trade in after you obtain your lowest price.

By asking the right questions, you can ensure your vehicle purchase is a smart one and that you’re getting what you’re paying for, whether you’re looking for an ex demo Holden or other great vehicle.

You can start your search online or at a used car dealer – Sydney has a number of prime dealer locations. Good research will ensure you get a great deal for your used car purchase.
